It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jean-Louis Chermant, former Vice President for Europe (1984-1988) and President of the International Society of Stereology (1988-1991), who died on August 11th, 2024.
During his academic career at Caen University, Jean-Louis Chermant conducted pioneering work on the application of image analysis and mathematical morphology to materials science. His expertise has made a significant impact in the field, particularly through his numerous books and scientific articles. His book, "Précis d'analyse d'image," co-authored with Michel Coster, has become a seminal reference in the field.
Jean-Louis Chermant leaves behind a valuable legacy that will continue to inspire and guide researchers and students. We will remember him not only for his outstanding scientific contributions but also for his dedication and passion for research. Jean-Louis Chermant helped many young scientists at the begining of their research. They remain indebted to him.
